shawn art

Here's a drawing of Montgomery Alligator and Murgatroid Sea Slug that Shawn sketched at the bottom of a letter he sent me, along with a hideous children's record and a Bazooka Joe book cover.

SHAWN: I lost your address. Send address to lasagnalagna mail, and I'll send you your fabulous prize. Slatts, I'll hand-deliver yours if I can ever remember to actually walk out the door with it.

question #7 (cont'd from this)

what is your earliest published cartoon?

Cover art for The Comics Buyers Guide, back when it was a humble fanzine published by Alan Light. The artwork was of Peter Rabbit, Patamousse, and several other comics rabbits. To the best of my recollection. I have a copy of it buried in the strata around here somewhere.

Here's an interesting thread I started at TCJ message board. It's just full of insider trading info and dirty laundry!

Here's a thread B. T. Steckler started about Runaway. It's just full of praise for my fabulous comic book, plus complaints that Montgomery Wart can be boring.

Speaking of which: B. T., I am probably going to Frankfurt Book Fair in October. I'm not sure how that collides with SPX, or if I can do both shows in one month. Why don't you just meet me in Frankfurt?

Hmm - in grabbing the links to these two events, I learn that they are very very close on the calendar. Now I must decide: go to SPX where I will hopefully be welcomed with open arms by comics fans familiar with Runaway? Or go to Frankfurt and wander around showing my wares to total strangers?

I'm 99% sure I'll go to Frankfurt. The US market and distribution for alternative comics is so alarmingly pathetic, I think I'll be better off trying to expand outside the USA. Even if I was the "Hit of SPX" I'd still probably not sell enough books to earn royalties here in the USA. Here's yet another TCJ thread, reinforcing my grim view of the USA comics market.

"AAAAAARGHHH!," He Says as he's trying to decide in the next couple weeks whether he wants to reserve a table at SPX!

He (meaning Me) secretly longs for the good ol' days when he could call just three days before SPX and reserve a table over the phone.

Nowadays, he hates having to make up his mind six months before the show (and more and more shows are getting like that, where they're "sold out" half a year away.) Then again, knowing that there's a show looming in the future that he's already paid for, he does get motivated to actually draw something.
