Wow, is the wooden cross growing from that plant? It IS a miracle fruit bush!

A very sweet lady made that cross for Brigham when he was a boy. The miracle fruit bush is there because that's where it gets the best sun. It all seems very random on the surface, but I'm sure there are forces at work that we cannot understand.

I said "very" twice in that paragraph. That's very lazy writing, and I pledge to do better.

I had an uncle who could grow anything that was green. He made a fortune with two plant nurseries and a landscaping business in Florida in the 50s-80s. He was savvy enough to have bought his property in the late 40s when it was worthless. I used to love walking around his beach nursery (as opposed to his inland "lake" nursery) where I'd encounter all kinds of amazing shit--bonsai trees that would make a monk weep; banana trees growing in the hothouse; a tree carefully spliced an nurtured that was bore grapefruit on one half and oranges on the other. He could grow anything.

He was also hideously, poisonously racist.

Which just goes to show, plants are color-blind!

My husband's uncle is the same- he's a citrus nurseryman, and grows some amazing spliced trees and hybrids. But he's also a scary racist and homophobe. The first time I met him he told me that he'd gone to Las Vegas in the 1950s to see Jimmy Durante perform, and that Jimmy was obviously a "fag". Uncle X got up out of his seat in the audience and stormed out, and told the box office that he wanted his money back for having to put up with such a display of flagrant fruitiness. When he told me this story he was still so incensed, he was red in the face.
