I left Mr. Deitch's comics in the hotel room with Mr. Dobbs and Mr. Bissette's copies of Mr. Deitch's book. It's a long story. And I'm a terrible scatterbrain, I admit that. Actually, in my defense, it's not so much that I am a scatterbrain as it is that I overtax my brain. There are just not enough hours in a day to do everything my brain wants to do. So I guess you might say my brain overtaxes ME. Especially in Prague. There was such a sensory overload that Brigham and I both had trouble turning off our brains and sleeping. Hopping a tram at 2 am just to see where it goes happened more than once.
I mailed the comics to Mr. Deitch when I got back home.
Racism is getting weirder every year. I'll have to photograph the window illustration of a local salon owned, I'm told, by a black family. It's called "Honey Chile" and has a graphic cartoon on the window that can only be described as the most base of racist illustrations. Only racist if, apparently, it were placed there by whitey. (And, no, I ain't talkin' 'bout Mr. Ford.)
I came across my absolute favorite mistranslation error EVER in Slovakia in 1990. It was a galeria named "GALERIA ART", but they put this funny decoration on their sign, just before the word "art"... the decoration was a vertical line with two horizontal lines going off the upper right, so it looked like a big slanted "F".
Galeria Fart!
I think they were kind of puzzled by our visit -- all these grinning Americans, so keen to buy their T-shirts and tote bags...

No wonder Europe's such a mess...in one country you're expecting presents, another: fish, another: poison, yet another: Jim Crow!
And in another: flatulence!
