i'm re-tooling my re-tooling

After wasting almost an entire day trying to make that shopping center thing work, I threw it in the trash. It was a pretty architectural sketch, but that just ain't what I'm about. I'm about goofy characters! This new design is more "me". In progress, obviously, but getting close to finished.

This is what it's like (for me) to design a website: Feverish spurts of activity, alternating with long periods of sitting on my petrifying butt and staring at a light source with my unblinking eyes as I "think". It's all slowly coming together and will probably all be up and running in June as planned, many thanks to Brigham for 3 hours of scanning Sunday. As I said in the comments earlier, I don't expect to sell a ton of art in the store, but it will make a nice online gallery. MM.net has been neglected for too long.

I read Robert Benchley story last night that blew me away. It's 2 floors down, so I'm not going to go get the name of it now, but I'll try to remember it soon. I'll recommend it to you! If you have ever read the story where everything is covered with fly specks, even the vinegar cruets, you already know the one I am talking about.

That psychedelic bird thing is awesome! Also Like the caricature of stan Laurel. And the hand lettering. Good job!

Thanks, but I better clear this up right away - the stuff up at the top is still reference material. I did not do either of the Stan Laurel images, or any hand-lettering - yet! Mine's gonna be BETTER!

eeTeeD, guess what - I got a gig drawing SPONGEBOB! It's just a small gig, so I took it. It's not an epic trail of tears of a book project.

I like the change in direction.
I'm a big googie fan but the goofy characters make more sense for you.

The bird is still cool. And of course your hand lettering is better! I should have guessed.

glad to hear about the spongebob project, and funny you should mention this.
was looking at this month's nick mag and couldn't help but notice how horrible the spongebob comic in it looks.
you could do tons better than this stuff.

I'm spongebob'in it too, Eeteed! My first Nick gig! My Spongebob is decidedly weirder, though.

While Mark is an old hand at Spongebob, my professional career has been pretty spotty, so this is a leg up for me.

The reason everyone is doing Spongebob right now is because it's his 10th anniversary and they want a bunch of different versions of the character. Otherwise they would have never used me.

great news for you, jed. congratulations!

when will your spongebob be published?

Jed Alexander said...

Thanks Eeteed.

I have no idea. Not for a while.

It's the the August issue, which in publishing language means late July. My guess is that's where Mark's pic is going to be too. It's a big Spongebob themed issue!

I liked the shopping center, but this one definitely is "you". The shopping center one could have been almost anyone's.

I bet you could do a pretty awesome Spongebob yourself, Eeteed. They just don't know it yet.
