why i don't jabber lately

A couple of people have asked what's up with this blog, where is the blogginess, why just art now?

Two things. I'm obsessed with organizing my massive and massively un-organized electronic files now, and actually creating art. Those are the two things I want to be doing in my "spare time". I'm glad to say that I have made lots of progress in the organizing, and am close to packaging some book collections. And glad that I actually started AND COMPLETED a huge 50-states-plus project so far this summer.

The second thing is: Other than that, not a whole lot is happening right now to blog about.

...besides, you have facebook for jabbering.

BRAVO! you for gettin' shit done. I should follow your example...

I know what you mean.

The main reason I created my own blog was to jabber on and on about my hiking, camping, backpacking, and canoe trips. But I haven't had much opportunity for such fun this year.

Alas!

"...and am close to packaging some book collections..."

you realize, that when you do this you are going to have to attend some conventions to advertise and sell your work.

i'm certain that your nose turned up after reading the above words, but if i may...

a few months ago i attended a very small local comic book convention which was held in a very small town.
the only guest at this convention was a second rate superhero artist who hasn't found work in comics for over a decade. even archie comics snubbed this man.
despite all this the man made over $500 in 4 hours time doing sketches for the fans.

have a nice table banner made. put out some samples of your spongebob and nick work. rake in some nice $.

I must correct your "nose turned up" comment.

Where did you get the idea I am a snob? I don't think I'm "above" going to conventions. The reason I don't go is financial. I spend more money than I earn. It is simply too much work to do to lose money.

I will indeed attend a few that are within driving distance etc, when the books are packaged. But I won't be going to San Diego, or even to NYC, if I have to lose money.

I appreciate your encouragement (I really do!) but $500 is not a lot of money for a weekend of hard work and travel and hotel bills and table fees...

i did not mean to imply that you are a snob.

...

turn up one's nose at: to regard with contempt; scorn

...

in the example i gave the artist lived about twenty minutes away from the convention. it was a one day event. the table was probably given to him for free.

There are a couple of semi-regular shows here in Albany that give free table space to artists. I think we're not too far from your neck of the woods. I'll find out when the next one is scheduled and send you the info.

Have you ever tried going to the San Diego Comic Con? Most of the artists I know who go make far more money than they spend. It's an original-art-selling paradise.

I've been to San Diego a couple of times.

I also have to take this into consideration: Do I want to spend some of my limited amount of vacation time working a huge con on the other side of the country? And do I spend time away from family, or double the expense and take The World's Greatest Cook along for the ride?

Trust me, folks. I have given this a lot of thought and I do have some background experience.

Bill, Albany is indeed within driving distance. I did not realize you live there! We should get together and have a bottle-rocket fight or something!

I'd like to know how good your aim is before I accept that invitation!
