what now?
Now that Runaway Comic is officially mothballed...
Well, first of all, get your ass in gear and buy one. You don't want to be like the people who missed Darerat/Tadpole, do you? Make sure you get Runaway now, while you can. Make sure you have all 3 issues. It may be scarce as hen's teeth in 10 years.
As for me -
I still have the dayjob. There goes the lion's share of my time right there. But I'm not complaining. I'm lucky to have a good job designing and illustrating.
I still have Nickelodeon Magazine, God bless their enlightened souls. I'm working on a 2-page-spread Teeny Weeny comic right now - Teeny Weeny in the Year 2525! And the Gag Station header every month, and assorted this-and-thats.
Theoretically Sculptor Rick and I will be doing Buddy McNutty #2 soon. We have not heard otherwise, but the Peanut People are late giving us the go-ahead, so we'll see. That's par for them, they habitually run behind. So I think it's most likely a go.
So, in the vast piles of time left after that, what's The Next Big Thing?
I have no idea. I know that I WANT it to be my children's books. There's still that comic strip and the "coffee table" collection of my work. I'm just carefully weighing what I feel like doing, what I should be doing, what others need me to do, what might actually make money, the usual concerns of life in general.
For now, for RIGHT now, I'm booked. In addition to the Teeny Weeny spread and the latest Gag Station header, I'm working on a Real Paying Job for Skinny Benny's agency, assorted honey-do chores at Martin Headquarters, helping re-design a re-launch of Panel-to-Panel (more about that later), farting around on this blog and designing the cover for Mike Dobbs' new book. I'll go ahead and post the rough sketch I just did. I'm sure Mike won't mind the advance publicity.
Oh yeah! And keeping Bissette in line! You can go over there and catch the latest carbon offset blather if you scroll down to the comments in this post.
BY THE WAY! Yapping about what a time-crunched multi-tasker I am reminds me of something I've been meaning to throw out there:
Is there anybody out there who is crazy enough to archive this blog on CD, for some free artwork? By archive I mean copy and organize all text into a simple text format and download all images, and organize it into an organized archive. That would mean re-naming the images, so that images match up to each post in the naming. Know what I mean? Anyone?
I know all of this could disappear if google takes a notion to clean up some hard drive space. I'd kinda like to keep a record of it, and have been very lax in doing so.

I promised Jed I'd look into this. I have not had a lot of time to spend on this. A few minutes here, a few there - I confess, I am not an Activist! But I am a man of my word. So here ya go, Jed. I also have not had a chance to actually dig into this info, don't know anything about the Republicans for Environmental Protection - for all I know it is a front for Haliburton. I'm sure you'll let me know if it is.

OK, this is my Big Question, after watching half of "Inconvenient Truth" and all of "The Great Global Warming Swindle":
Al Gore says CO2 is dramatically higher now than it has ever been. A scientist in "swindle" says that CO2 has been dramatically higher in the past than it is now.
Who is correct?
That is what I want to know. The one thing in "Inconvenient Truth" that floored me, and that I have not heard a good explanation for, is the dramatically high CO2 argument. And now it has been blown away, along with a lot of other junk in "Truth". Or has it? Whose posse of scientists is the most reliable and genuine and uncorrupted? I'm asking, not telling, so don't assume I've chosen sides. The fact is, I am inclined to think that the planet probably is suffering from overexploitation by humans - but I'm not convinced that the "solutions" that are being called for will work, and I am very convinced that the politics behind the whole global warming movement is skewed and corrupt. Could be wrong. I'm not a zealot. I'm genuinely curious about the whole thing. And I am the first to admit that I may have missed some important nuance in either argument.
If you watch "Swindle" at least watch half of it. I mean, if you want to argue with me or correct me, at least watch half. I think that's fair, since I watched half of "Truth". I would have watched all of Truth, but smarmy Al Gore just makes me want to barf. If there's something in the second half that I really need to see, something that will blow "Swindle" out of the water, please comment and let me know.

Dear SO HUM, if you by chance happen to ever read this - THANK YOU for your terror prevention efforts. Your super ultra low emissions are an inspiration to us all. But may I make one suggestion? Lose the spoiler! That spoiler just SCREAMS "speed speed SPEED!" It is sending a mixed signal!

If a blog has comment moderation enabled and receives multiple comments in the same minute to different posts, some of those comments will not appear in the comment moderation list, though they will be counted on the Dashboard as needing moderation. These comments will also not appear on the blog.
The comments have not been lost, and we will be fixing this in the near term to prevent it from happening again. At that time we will also recover the past missing comments so that they can be moderated.
Just as I suspected. So many people are trying to tell Jed he's Harvey Kurtzman's buttboy, they are clogging up the system.

Here's my post in response to Greg on the "Rambl'in Man" thread that won't post:
From the low brow Mad and Thomas Nast, to the high brow Thurber, satire crosses all brows, Greg. I know you didn't say that satire had a brow, but you did choose to juxtapose browness with just plain silly, and I agree that that's been the aim of SNL all along. However, for some reason, culturally the show's been associated with "edginess" ie subversiveness, which I argue, it's never been, so we still have yet to disagree.
A certain cache comes with this "edgy" title, and I think this gives the false impression that these shows, SNL, David Letterman, Conan O'Brian, and the Simpsons, largely driven by the Harvard Lampoon/National Lampoon fraternity and their boyfriends (Harold Ramis, Al Franken, Buck Henry, Second City), are throwing something other than softballs at "the man". It just aint so.
This doesn't make these shows bad or not funny. It does, however, make them less relevant than they could be if it were truly so important that they hone their "edge". This is what I mean by middle class passivity. When this is what passes for subversive in our culture, few real subversives will actually emerge. Where are the Abby Hoffmans of the post Baby Boomer generation? This is why stuff like the Patriot Act is kicking us in the balls.
No it's not the Simpsons fault, and it's not the Simpsons responsibility to be satirical. At this point I'm no longer having a Simpsons argument--that's Eeteed territory now--I'm just ellaborating on the subject of the importance of satire, based on the premise that these shows aren't.
Yes this is a completely different argument and subject. I get to do that if I want.
Also, I agree, Mark, that Carbon Credits are a ludicrous concept. If we want to sustain our environment We just plain gotta consume less. Note: OUR environment, not THE environment--OUR meaning a place that's comfortable for us to live. THE environment has survived worse than us. We're not saving the world because the world doesn't need saving, but biodiversity makes the world a whole lot more interesting and comfortable and survivable.
Geez Mark, with this Middle East book, and now the Carbon Credits thing, your starting to sound like a real Commie Liberal Pinko!

Jed's right about one thing - "our" planet vs "the" planet. The planet will survive without us.
I'd add that, whatever the problem is (I'm not convinced anyone can accurately measure the scope of it), it is everybody's problem. Not the USA's problem. And if I could somehow magically become King of the Cause, I'd make everyone focus on overpopulation more than carbon emissions. I think cutting down atmosphere-cleansing rain forests so more farting cattle can graze is not helping matters much. As one example. But I don't want to spin off into Activism here, I just want you to BUY RUNAWAY COMIC #3!
